In an emotional and dramatic late-morning news conference, a friend of Cecilia Zhang's family spoke directly to her abductor, warning that person "you made one mistake. We don't want you to make another mistake."
Jack Jai, a self-employed neighbour of the abducted 9-year-old girl, said "we know she is alive." He appealed to the person or persons who took Cecilia from her bedroom in a bold abduction either late Sunday or early Monday to phone him "if you are afraid of the police."

Jai read out his cell phone number twice (416-816-6109) during the news conference outside the Zhang home at Whitehorn Cres. in North York.

"I know you are watching. Tell me what you want," Jai said to the abductor.

He also asked the abductor to take care of Cecilia.

"Give her a book because she loves to read," Jai said.

Asked how Cecilia's parents are coping with the ordeal, Jai said they were stricken but hopeful.

"The parents are under tremendous stress, very anxious and worried ... they're praying for the safe return of their lovely daughter," he said.

Earlier, Toronto police refused to comment on reports that the motive behind Cecilia's abduction was money.

Sergeant Jim Muscat, speaking to reporters this morning, termed the ransom reports as "speculative, and I'm not here to speculate.

"I'm aware of no information received by either the Toronto Police Service or anyone [in] the family," Muscat said.

One media outlet reported this morning that the family may have received two phone calls around the time of the disappearance.
Asked about the ransom rumours and how he knew Cecilia was alive, Jai said, "I'm not in consistent contact with the police. I don't have any evidence (that she is alive). This is just my wish."

Cecilia Zhang was reported missing Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. after her parents went to wake her for school and found that she was not in her room.

Police say the Grade 4 student at Seneca Hill Public School was taken from her home. They are focusing on a backdoor window with a screen covering that was found ajar.

Hundreds of officers continue to conduct door-to-door searches and a grid search.

"We're focusing on the safe return of Cecilia," Muscat said. "The investigators must keep an open mind and not get hung up on any one specific area of this kind of an investigation."

Cecilia's parents sent a message read by police yesterday, urging the abductor to return Cecilia to a safe location so that the police can bring her home.
