Twelve animals symbolize the twelve signs of the Chinese horoscope. Because the Chinese culture uses a lunar calendar based on the moon's cycle, the dates that animal signs encompass change yearly. The year 2004 is the Year of the Monkey.

It is believed that the Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back to 2637 BC. Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from Earth. Only twelve of the animals came to bid him farewell, so Buddha honoured each of them with a year. The order was taken from the sequence in which they appeared to him - first the Rat, then the Ox, the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar. It is believed that a person takes on the characteristics of the animal belonging to the year they were born. There is also a cycle of five elements - wood, fire, earth, metal and water.
