Today's highlights in history:

On this date in 1818, Canada and the U-S signed the Convention of London. The treaty established the 49th parallel as the boundary from Rainy River, Ontario to the Rockies.

On this date in 1848, a treaty for the joint occupation of Oregon was signed by Britain and the United States. The pact restored to the U-S the right of fishing off Newfoundland and Labrador, and established the boundary west of Lake of the Woods, Ontario.

And on this date in 1903, Canada lost the Alaska Boundary Dispute with the United States when the British member of the tribunal sided with the American position. The decision embittered Canada by giving the U-S ports on the panhandle coast of Alaska and denying Canadian coastal access to the Yukon.

In 1884, the first edition of ``La Presse'' was published in Montreal.

In 1920, British Columbia voters rejected prohibition of liquor.

In 1945, women were permitted to vote for the first time in France.

In 1956, the Montreal Alouettes set a C-F-L record for points in one game in an 82-14 hammering of the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

In 1968, former American first lady Jacqueline Kennedy married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis on the island of Scorpios, which Onassis owned.

In 1978, Wayne Gretzky of the W-H-A's Indianapolis Racers scored his first two pro regular-season goals, 39 seconds apart, in a 4-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. Gretzky and two teammates were sold to the Oilers two weeks later.

In 1991, fire broke out in the hills above Oakland, California. Twenty-five people were killed and more than three-thousand homes destroyed.

In 1992, the first World Series game outside the United States was played in Toronto between the Blue Jays and the Atlanta Braves. The Jays won 3-2 and went on to take the series in six games.

In 2000, former B-C premier Glen Clark was charged with two criminal offences in connection with a casino licence application.
