In 2023, Canada imported $2.57 billion worth of iron and steel from China. This makes China one of the top three countries that supply steel to Canada.
Explanation
According to the United Nations COMTRADE database, Canada imported 1,519,810 kilograms of iron and steel, or $2.57 billion worth, from China in 2023. Canada has imposed 52 trade measures on Indo-Pacific countries related to the steel industry, including 18 measures targeting China. The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) has urged the Government of Canada to consider a comparable tariff approach to align with the United States.
