One need not judge so-called 香蕉s too harshly. After all Canada is predominantly Anglo-French, and too succeed in Canada one must master the two founding Canadian cultures and languages (English and French). As 汉语 gains wider international acceptance, it is a skill one should of course TRY to acquire. But let's be real about this, learning 汉语 in a non-Chinese speaking society is hard, and mastering it is near impossible. Chinese is without a doubt one of the most difficult languages in the world.
Not everyone can become a "大山". But one need not lose any sleep over this.
