The majority of Taiwanese reject the idea of reunification with the communist China. If China swallows Taiwan now, the island would be worse than Afganistan. Reunification with Taiwan is possible only when mainland China becomes a free and democratic country.

回复 weinberger：这个难说。 台湾还是有很大一部分人自认是中国人的，只要两岸继续接触交流下去，增加共识，台湾的前途迟早会和大陆绑在一起的。

回复 macrophage：Closer economic tie does not necessarily help reunification. The Taiwanese businessmen are now enjoying a lot of special treatments already because Chinese gov want to lure them to help reunification. If Taiwan becomes just a Chinese province, then those special treatments will be gone or the other provinces would protest. So political reunification will not really bring any additional economic benefits. Besides that, most politicans are against the idea because they will be demoted after reunification, President will become just a Provincial Premier so on, and everything has to be approved by Beijing. Add to that, 90% of Native Taiwanese are strongly object to reunification as always.
