Yale SOM Announces Largest Alumni Gift to DatePosted on: January 4, 2010
Yale President Richard C. Levin PhD '74 announced on January 4, 2010, that Lei Zhang MBA '02, GRD '02 has pledged the largest gift ever to the Yale School of Management by a graduate of the school. Zhang's pledge, made less than 10 years after his graduation from Yale, also represents the largest gift to date from a young Yale University alumnus. Zhang, the founder and managing partner of Hillhouse Capital Management, will give $8,888,888 primarily to help build Yale SOM’s new campus. A portion of the gift will provide scholarship support for the International Relations Program at Yale's new Jackson Institute of Global Affairs, as well as funding for a variety of China-related activities at the university. The announcement came at a special event co-hosted by Levin and Yale School of Management Dean Sharon M. Oster at the Westin Beijing Chaoyang, which included a panel discussion between several prominent SOM alumni called "Investing in the Middle Kingdom."
The panel discussion, moderated by Levin, included Lei Zhang, as well as Brad Huang '90, founder and president, Lotus Capital Management; David Li '94, managing director, E.M. Warburg Pincus & Co.; Liang Meng '97, CEO Greater China Private Equity, D.E. Shaw & Co. Ltd; and Kevin Zhang '94, managing partner, Trustbridge Partners Ltd.
In announcing the gift, President Levin commented, "This truly extraordinary and auspicious gift reflects the deep commitment to Yale that Lei Zhang shares with so many fellow graduates of the School of Management. Lei’s generosity also represents a significant step toward the realization of SOM’s new campus."
Dean Oster added, "I’m delighted to be here in Beijing with so many of our former students, including Lei. His devotion to SOM is remarkable, and the entire SOM community joins me in thanking him for his wonderful support. We look forward to the construction of the auditorium in the new campus that will bear Lei Zhang’s name."
Zhang, a member of the SOM Board of Advisors and China Board of Advisors, started Hillhouse Capital Management in 2005 and rapidly built the largest independent fund in China. While at SOM, he worked for David Swensen at the Yale Investments Office. He translated Swensen’s Pioneering Portfolio Management into Chinese, a task that required him to create Chinese words for "fiduciary" and "endowment." When he moved back to China, with an initial investment from the Yale endowment, he opened Hillhouse Capital Management with $30 million under management. Zhang has made impressive returns and attracted numerous new investors; he now has $2.5 billion under management.
Zhang chose to make his gift $8,888,888 because of the significance of the number eight in Chinese culture. Throughout China, eight is considered lucky. The Chinese word for "eight" sounds similar to those for "wealth" and "fortune."
Zhang, raised in Central China, placed first out of 100,000 students in his province for the national university entrance exam. He studied international finance at the People’s University of China and chose Yale to earn his MBA and a master’s degree in international relations. Zhang has said that Yale changed his life. He named both his company and a foundation for Hillhouse Avenue, the New Haven street that runs through the SOM campus.

SOM announces largest alumni gift to date
By Ilana Seager
Staff Reporter
Published Thursday, January 7, 2010
Though the School of Management has yet to break ground on its new campus, the planned development will get a big financial boost from one SOM alumnus.
University President Richard Levin announced at a Jan. 4 conference in Beijing that Lei Zhang GRD '02 SOM '02 has pledged $8,888,888 to the SOM, primarily to aid the construction of the school's new campus. The gift — which will also provide support for an international relations scholarship and fund China-related activities at Yale — is the largest donation on record from a young University graduate and the largest gift the SOM has ever received from a graduate of the school.
"This truly extraordinary and auspicious gift reflects the deep commitment to Yale that Lei Zhang shares with so many fellow graduates of the School of Management," Levin said in his announcement, according to the Office of Public Affairs. "Lei’s generosity also represents a significant step toward the realization of SOM’s new campus."
Zhang explained in an e-mail Thursday afternoon that he hopes his gift to the SOM will serve to strengthen ties between the University and China. Historically, Zhang said, the relationship between China and Yale has been mostly one-way, with Yale usually serving as the benefactor. He said he anticipates that his $8,888,888 pledge will be the start of a more reciprocal relationship.
"I think this is simply the right thing to do at the right time," Zhang said.
SOM Dean Sharon Oster, who was also present for the announcement, said in an e-mail that the school is currently working with donors to match gifts with spaces on the new campus, planned for Whitney Avenue and Sachem Street. She said she believes the new auditorium there will carry Zhang's name.
"Part of my delight at this gift comes from knowing that our new building will have names that represent the diversity of men and women who have been part of the Yale community," she said.
Oster said Zhang, who was raised in central China, came to Yale from a modest background and with little experience in the financial world. At Yale, she said, Zhang found his vocation and now wants to give back to the SOM community — and prompt other graduates to do the same.
"One of Lei Zhang's explicit goals in making this gift public is to lead by example in his philanthropy," Oster said, adding, "I have found our Chinese alumni at SOM to be among our most generous."
In addition to his SOM degree, Zhang received a master's in international relations from Yale. He is the founder and managing partner of Hillhouse Capital Management, an investment fund named for Hillhouse Avenue, the street that runs through the current SOM campus.
According to the OPA, Zhang chose $8,888,888 as the value of his gift because the number eight is considered lucky in Chinese culture.

为什么要问这种问题呢?
爱捐给谁,是个人意愿。没说捐给耶鲁就一定也要捐钱给中国的。

Eight’s the lucky number at SOM
As a student at the School of Management, Lei Zhang’02MBA, ’02MA, worked for David Swensen ’80PhD in the university’s investment office.
Apparently he learned well: less than 10 years out, Zhang has built his Hillhouse Capital Management into the biggest independent fund in his native China. Now he’s returning the favor in the form of an $8,888,888 donation (in China, 8 represents prosperity) to SOM.
Yale announced the gift in China, at an event co-hosted by university president Richard Levin ’74PhD and SOM dean Sharon Oster. According to a press release, it’s the biggest donation ever from an SOM alumnus.
Yale played more than just a teaching role in Zhang’s success: he launched Hillhouse Capital Management in 2005 with a startup investment from the university endowment.
“It’s no overstatement to say that SOM changed my life,” says Zhang, a member of the school’s Board of Advisors and China Board of Advisors, who named his company for the street that runs through the SOM campus.
Speaking of which, Levin calls Zhang’s pledge “a significant step toward the realization of SOM’s new campus,” and Oster says the school’s new auditorium will bear his name. An SOM spokeswoman couldn’t be reached for an update on the status of that project, for which design work is well underway and demolition is planned — but no construction date or major donor has been announced.
