Why he is so happy now? The reasons are quite simple. He told us he had no money and needed to apply for help. Now, he has a high profile lawyer working for him, so he must have money (and a lot of money) somewhere. The lawyer may also tell him that in Canada, the penalty for this kind of "commerical crime" is very light. Check the records and you can find most of the time people go to jail for two or three years no matter how much money is involved.
Remember, suppose a person gets a three-year jail term, he can deduct the week-ends and holidays from the three years. If he is detained before he is found guilt, he can also deduct the time from the jail term. (In fact, it counts as double the time, that means in Tang's case, he was detained for three months, he could claim six months from his jail term). A "good" prisoner can also apply for parole after he serves 1/3 of the jail term. Even if he cannot get out after he serves 1/3 of the term, he can try again after he serves 1/2 of the term, and most likely he can get out. Now you know how much time Tang needs to spend in prison if he is guilty.
With that kind of money and so little time in jail, no wander he is happy now.
