The Financial Post reported Monday government officials are looking at whether it needs to further toughen rules that would make it harder to get a mortgage, on concerns that Canadian households are mired in debt.
Mr. Flaherty said there were no plans to toughen rules further “at this time,” but would do so if required. “We are monitoring consumer debt and mortgages closely,” he said, noting the housing market has cooled down since Ottawa introduced changes to mortgage rules earlier this year.
