I have done timeshare and vacation members for over 10 years, and in my experience, they are not bad.
Timeshare is not for everyone. You will benefit from it only if your lifestyle includes a vacation every year. A vacation is not traveling, sightseeing or visiting families in China. Just like cottage, alot of Chinese think that's a stupid thing to do, but Canadians are crazy with one by a lake front.
If you are driving a BMW, carrying an LV bag and owning a big house, a timeshare property and perhaps a golf membership are not bad to enrich your life.
Pay attention to the following:
1. Don't do it unless your family income exceeds 80K per year. Otherwise you will feel the financial burden.
2. You maximize the values if you have a family of 4 or even bigger. Timeshare is not for singles.
3. You want a relaxing vacation, not rushing to sightseeing spots for 15 minutes for photos.
4. Don't buy in Canada, because our timeshare laws are not as advanced as those in USA, UK and Spain.
5. Don't buy vacation membership (though I have one). Buy deeded property, which is like your house. If anything happens to the vacation club, you still have the property.
6. Don't buy from developers. Buy used from the resale market like redweek.com, holidaygroup.com or ebay.com.
7. Take those freebies. Go try the property. Buy if you like it and say no if you don't.
Not all timeshares are con artists. In the market, Marriott, Sheraton, Starwood are mega companies in the stock market. Wyhdam owns Fairfield, RCI and Carnival cruise. They are bigger than Air Canada.
After said that, this one in Mississauga is con artist. Don't buy from them.

Good decision you didn't fall into the trap. A lot of promises are not in the contract, are misleading. You will regret for the rest of your life if you buy it.

Timeshare freebies are available. Contact major players like Marriott, Starwood, Sheraton, Fairfield and Sunterra. They can book you into a 3 day weekend package for like $199 for a 2 bedroom luxury resort, plus a coupon for dinner, or $399 for a week. The fair market value is like $1800 for the week. You and your spouse must attend a 90 minute presentation. Just say no, after the hour and a half, during which there is free food and drinks including alcohol.
2 months ago in Toronto, a real estate broker offered free dinner and then a trip to New Castle, Ontario to sell their apartment units.
Freebies are real as long as you have the will power to say no at the end.
Don't buy anything if you can't afford it. Just like you won't buy a BMW but you can go test drive it as often as you want.

That's either timeshare or vacation membership, which I have done for over 10 years.
Be careful but it doesn't mean it must be bad. In North America, there are millions of families owning timeshares and vacation membership.
Do your due diligence and read the following web site for more information: http://tugbbs.com/forums/
Timeshare or vacation membership is a lifestyle for lots of Canadians and Americans.
Also, search ebay.com (not .ca). You will find lots of timeshare or vacation membership for sale. In December, I bought a unit deeded property for $67 and another unit also deeded property for $102.50. This vacation can be very cheap if you know how to maximize their values.
You can browse rci.com, intervalworld.com, tradingplaces.com and daelive.com.
