Lots of us never speak one single English word for years and we live in Canada so well, in the Chinese community though.
We don't need to learn guandonghua, which is not a big deal.
The issue is we are not resistant against English, French, Italian and so on and so forth.
Why are we so resistant against guandonghua? The answer is our inferiority complex.
When you take it easy and treat it like a language, you won't have the reaction.
The same old bad habit of Chinese: we fight amongst ourselves.

Did you ever speak putonghua in Canada? If you choose to stay away from the Chinese community and never speak Putonghua, you can learn English faster. You can live quite well without the mother tongue.

其实很多时候歧视更多的是来自自己的自卑心理，当你不会讲粤语的时候，别人随便骂你几句，你都会说别人歧视你。其实未必是因为语言问题。
董粤语的人也会被香港人骂，说普通话的人同样会被自己的人说不是的时候。说别人歧视是接口之一。
我所遇到的真正歧视，主要还是大家觉得很Nice 的白人。他们表面对你不错，真正涉及他们利益的时候总能把你踢开。

that's true. and it's sad.
but when you care a lot and think of discrimination, they will be there all the time and everywhere.
when there is a true discrimination, get some evidence, and sue them.

早几年加拿大讲国语人少, 我来加国, 因生活所迫,急需找一分养家的LABOUR 工, 但那时只能在短期内找到华人厂,我所感受到的强烈"种族"歧视不是来自本地的白人, 而是来自我们这些被外族共称为华人但讲粤语的人群...无论是在华人厂还是华人超市...

All my discriminatory experience is from the mainstream society. Once you become a competitor with them, you will feel the discrimination. In the factory, those gave you bad experience in fact are losers who have nothing except a low life.
Discrimination from Chinese no matter what they speak is from their ignorance. Discrimination from the mainstream society is real attack.

粤语俗称鸟语，在说鸟语的圈子里打工，别说高薪，就是平均薪酬都很难达到，甚至是最低工资。还是把这个时间和精力放在英语上把，福利好正规的西人公司的专业职位不能说100%，但至少95%只要求英语，除非它是个华人小公司。
You can call guandonghua 鸟语, just like some Canadians say Putonghua (Mandarin) is like dogs barking.
Chinese deserve centuries of humilation by the western powers. The 3 Chinese immigrant groups (from mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong) all bad mouth one another. What a shame.
It is "painful" to live as a minority. In Canada, Chinese is a minority. In the Chinese community, Putonghua speakers are a minority. The landscape may be different in 10 years or so.
Deep down inside the mainland Chinese is the inferiority complex. Mainland Chinese questions who they (those from Taiwan and Hong Kong) are to tell them what to do. In fact, we can learn from entreprenurship from Taiwan Chinese and outstanding presence of Hong Kong Chinese in mainstream professional careers.
When we go to New York City, we have to speak Fuzhou dialect. You can choose to mingle with or stay away from them; that's your choice.
I admire your courage and persistence, learning a new language is never easy.
