For the second time in a year, Canada’s federal government has raised the fee for someone to become a citizen.
As of today, Jan. 1, the price for processing citizenship documents is now $530, up from the price set last February of $300.
The Citizenship and Immigration Department says the higher price will allow it to recoup almost all of the $555 it costs to process citizenship.
Ottawa has wanted to increase fees for years, arguing would-be citizens should cover more of the cost of processing their applications.
The government says the hike will save an estimated $41-million a year.
