TTC 周末仍关闭 周一将全面恢复运营

TTC fully open to riders Monday

TORONTO - Toronto's 1.4 million public transit users will be able to use the subway system, buses and streetcars to go to work on Monday for the first time since Thursday's power outage.

Rick Ducharme, general manger with the Toronto Transit Commission, said the subways were closed to the public on Saturday and Sunday because the TTC could not fully guarantee the safety of riders.

Officials were worried about people getting stranded in case they had to begin rolling power backouts to deal with excessive power demands.

The decision to run subways on Monday is based on a promise by Toronto Hydro to supply the TTC with sufficient energy to provide uninterrupted and safe service, "or we wouldn't be doing it," said Ducharme.

The provincial GO System which transports about 170,000 train and bus passengers on an average business day, resumed its normal schedule on Sunday. About 90 percent of those passengers get off in downtown Toronto

Toronto mayor Mel Lastman continued to press the need for residents and businesses to cut down their consumption of energy.

He has asked that public offices and property mangers turn their air conditioning to 25.5 C. To beat the expected increase in temperature, the city will open additional pools and splash pads.

Industrial firms across the province are being asked to cut back 50 per cent on their energy needs.

Garbage pickup will continue, public daycare will remain open on Monday, but the provincial government has asked that opening day of the Canadian National Exhibition be delayed.

On Sunday the federal government said that only its essential workers should report to work on Monday in Ontario and should contact their supervisors if in doubt. Federal employees working in Quebec were told to report to work regardless of where they live.
