Police mum on ransom rumour
No comment on reports Cecilie kidnapped for money
Toronto police refused to comment today on reports that the motive behind the abduction of 9-year-old Cecilia Zhang was money.
Sergeant Jim Muscat, speaking to reporters at the girl's home on Whitehorn Cres. in North York this morning, termed the ransom reports as "speculative, and I'm not here to speculate.
"I'm aware of no information received by either the Toronto Police Service or anyone [in] the family," Muscat said.
Cecilia Zhang was reported missing Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. after her parents went to wake her for school and found that she was not in her room.
Police say the Grade 4 student at Seneca Hill Public School was taken from her home. They are focusing on a backdoor window with a screen covering that was found ajar.
Hundreds of officers continue to conduct door-to-door searches and a grid search.
"We're focusing on the safe return of Cecilia," Muscat said. "The investigators must keep an open mind and not get hung up on any one specific area of this kind of an investigation."
One media report has said the family may have received two mysterious phone calls about the time of Cecilia's disappearance.
Muscat said a friend of the family would be speaking this morning to the media. The parents sent a message read by police yesterday, urging the person or persons to return Cecilia to a safe location so that the police can bring her home.
