The FALL COLOUR PROGRESSION REPORT is produced each Monday and Thursday during the beautiful fall colour season, in the province of Ontario.

This is the report for Friday, September 28, 2007

Northern Ontario Region

The north-western region of the province is offering some wonderful colour with a 50% colour change in the Kenora region with pockets of red from the sumacs and bright yellow from the poplar trees. Fort Francesis reporting a 75% colour change with bright yellow and lots of bright red, especially along highway 11. The Thunder Bayarea has the colour now advanced to a 60% change with muted gold and yellow, the dominant colours. The route along Highway 11 and 17 towards Kakabeka Falls is offering excellent colour at this time.

In the Sault Ste. Marie area, the colours have advanced quickly to a 75% change at this time with beautifulpatches of crimson red, deep burgundy, fiery orange and bright gold. The Agawa Canyon Tour Trainadventure out of Sault Ste. Marie, offers an outstanding fall colour outing in the Algoma region. The coloursare now at PEAK with 100% colour change, in the canyon area. The tour train is very popular and runs through October 13th. It is always best to book your tour and accommodation well in advance of your visit to the area. The Manitoulin Islandregion has seen the colours advance to 50% with dominant colours being red, orange, yellow and some brown with green for contrast. Highway 6 from South Baymouth to the junction of highway 542 is a nice fall colour drive. There are beautiful pockets of colour around Mindemoya.

We now have a 40% colour change in the far north east in the Temagami region with bright yellow being thedominant colour. The Temagami Tower lookout offers an outstanding panoramic view. The North Bayarea is now reporting a 70% colour change along highway 11 with the “reds” brighter now. The drive from North Bay to Huntsville along highway 11 is excellent at this time. The “Dream Catcher Express” day trip train excursions from North Bay to Temagami and return take place September 28th, 29th and 30th. The Sudbury region is reporting just a 20% colour change with small pockets of bright yellow. Killarney Provincial Park, along the shore of Georgian Bay, reports the colour has advanced to about a 40 to 45% change, with the Granite Ridge Trail, in the park, offering some nice fall colour viewing. Algonquin Provincial Park is an extremely popular fall colour destination. The colour has advanced quickly over the last week and is now at PEAK . Magnificent reds, oranges, yellows and burgundies dominant the Highway 60 corridor. An ideal viewing location, during the fall colour period in Algonquin Park, is the view from the observation deck at the world class visitor centre. Hardwood Trail, Booth’s Rock and Lookout Trail offer just a few of many spectacular views in the park. Ragged Falls, just off highway 60 outside the west gate of the Algonquin also offers an ideal viewing location.

Central Ontario Region

The Parry Sound and Muskoka regions are starting to see some good fall colour with a 50% change at this time with some pockets of bright orange and red. Over the next few weeks, a boat cruise of these areas is a wonderful way to enjoy the fall colours. Views from the observation decks at the fire tower lookouts at Parry Sound and Dorset are outstanding in the fall, along with the Lion’s Lookout in Huntsville. Highway 117 from Bracebridge across to Baysville offers some beautiful colour at this time. The Haliburton area has advanced to a 40% change, with the drive along Highway 35 always incredible during the fall. Buttermilk Falls, along Highway 35, north of Mindenis an excellent viewing location. Highway 118 in the Carnarvon area always offers some good fall colour. The Kawartha Lakesregion is reporting a 60% colour change as well. Highway 121 off Highway 35 is offering some beautiful colour at this time. The Barrie, Orillia, Midland and across to Wasaga Beach area is showing a 45% colour change. The Horseshoe Valley region, north east of Barrie is offering some outstanding pockets of colour. The two hour South Simcoe Fall Colour Train Excursions out of the Tottenham area continue over the next couple of weekends. The Collingwood area offers some ideal fall colour viewing locations especially around the Scenic Caves. The area is reporting a 50% change. The view from the suspension bridge at Scenic Caves, at the top of Blue Mountain, is always

incredible but especially nice during the fall.

Ottawa Region

The Ottawaregion reports a 50% colour change at this time with some nice pockets of deep yellow and orange along with small pockets of bright red. A walk or bike ride along the Rideau Canal and the many parkland areas of Ottawa offers an excellent fall colour experience.

Eastern Ontario Region

There is 75 to 80% colour change now in the Pembroke area across to Renfrew to Arnprior and along to the Ottawa Valleyregion. Nice driving areas over the next few weeks include 512, 514 and County Road 64. A fall colour drive along the 1000 Island Parkway or a boat cruise through the 1000 islands will be very popular activities over the next few weeks. The Prince Edward County region east to Kingstonand further east to Cornwallis reporting a 20 to 40% colour change at this time.

South-western Ontario Region

There is a 40% colour change at this time in the Owen Soundregion with ideal fall colour locations over the next couple of weeks being Inglis Falls and Harrison Park. The drive north of Owen Sound on Grey County Road 1 between Owen Sound and Wiarton is always nice, during the fall. The Beaver Valley region south of Thornbury and onto Hockley Valley, east of Orangeville the colour has advanced to a 35% change. There are several excellent lookout locations in the Beaver Valley as you approach the village of Kimberleyfrom the south on Grey County Road 13. Continuing on Grey County 13 to Thornbury is very nice as well.

In the Hockley Valley region, Dufferin County Road 7 and the 3rd line of Mono offers a great fall colour drive. The Forks of the Credit Provincial Park near Belfountain offers beautiful walking trails and is always a popular fall colour destination. The Elora and Fergus area is reporting some very nice early colour at this time, especially around the Elora Gorge. The Royal Botanical Gardens in the Burlington and Hamilton regions is reporting a 30% colour change with bright yellow the dominant colours along with some small patches of red. The region along the eastern shoreline of Lake Huron in the Goderich, Bayfield region has seen the colour advance to a 35% colour change. Muted rusts and yellows are the dominant colours. There is a 15% colour change in the Sarniaregion. No significant colour change as yet in the Essex, Kingsvilleand Point Pelee areas.

Niagara Falls Region

There is just a 15% colour change in the Niagara Peninsula. The colours are subdued with pockets of burnt orange, yellow and just the odd splash of red in the area. The Niagara Parkway from Niagara on the Lake through to Fort Erie is always a very popular fall colour location, especially the view to the north along the Niagara River from the Brock Monument lookout at Queenston.

Great Toronto Region

There is a 30% colour change in the parkland areas of Toronto including the Rouge Valley area and High Park. The colours are advancing as well with a 20 to 30% change along the waterfront parkland areas. It’s a busy time of year for Fall Colour Studio Tours.
