(1) Thanks for your kind and and cordial answer: "That’s benefit of my husband".
(2) According to your user ID "北京酸菜鱼" and my own experience, we'd better put something aside, such as good past position or location. As we know everywhere there are good people and bad people, but some people have general ideas for that (or say bias, prejudice). So my strategy is that using my own personality shows others or my bosses.
(3) According what you mentioned in your article(you can do translation and writing and so on), especially your good attitude of life (or say mindset, outlook on life), and my Canadian life, you self will find a special way to success in the very near future.
(4) I suggest that you'd better give up that kind of idea: "you want to keep up on similar level to your husband" . What is the real difference between two people's lives? If you two love and respect each other, why do you two need to be at similar or same level? Family is a family, two people join together to have good lives. Best wishes to you and your husband. Enjoy your life, no matter in China or Canada.
(5). If you have chance to make money,do it right now. If you do not, analize yourself and the social situation to decide which why you prefer, then prepare it and study something or learn some new skills. meet and value some good friends. Never waste to much of time every day. Then someday it will surprise you that you reach your goal so soon.

为什么在国内学新闻的到这里一定要从事本专业？
到这里改行的人多的是。到这里就要适应这里的环境。
早改行早得益。找到合适自己的机会比国内多多了。
如果你一定认准了，在这里也非新闻不做。那也行，不就是差两门语言吗？下苦功去呀。有付出不怕没回报。
只怕付出的东西比改行学新专业多多了，划不来。

There is No such concepts in Canada: "从事本专业". It is from the bottom of my heart.

You get charged for drinking each cup of coffee at "Coffee Time". In "Second Cup", the second cup is FREE if you like their coffee.

There was her part time job to make money and later on to open her own business.
(3) The current newspaper people or say bosses, so called "Bao Run," most of them are disgusting. If you really want to be sucessful in that aera, you have to be your own boss. Trust me.
No one is the boss including yourself. As long as you are getting money from someone, you are not the boss.

there are some newspapers supported by chinese government. You may try them first. But it is not easy. I know one editor from Shanghai who is working in a restaurant. good luck
